Funny, I thought that anyone over the age of 18 would look odd in shorts and tights as a regular dress item. Glad to see that pushed back.

Recently a male person from Gather (a social / news site) asked me to comment on what I thought about pantyhose for men.

“It’s not too difficult to obtain the thoughts of the men who wear hose for fashion/leg health reasons (various blogs/forums, etc.). But, it’s hard to get good candid opinions of women on the topic of men’s hosiery.

Care to share your opinions?”

As you may or may not know I’m familiar with the subject of fashion, in particular, fashion hosiery. I had researched the industry a few years back as I was interested in starting up my own hosiery boutique in the Toronto (Ontario Canada) area.

As for my opinion about men and tights, I think it should matter in any way if men want to wear tights or pantyhose. They have really been wearing tights in public, at least in the GTA, for years now via way of the spandex running and cycling tights. I have also seen men in “woman’s” tights before the spandex ones were available (back in the 70’s). One day I caught a glimpse of a guy out jogging in shorts and bright orange tights. Wonder were he got them from?

For current trends, I found it interesting to see how fashion designers tried to integrate leggings into the male wardrobe and still have it come across as masculine. In my opinion it didn’t work as everyday wear. I would like to see them make use of pantyhose or tights for men in something other than a sports outfit under shorts. From my research into fashion, hosiery in particular can be used to;

1. smooth the lines of the body and legs
2. hide imperfections
3. to even out or blend the colour - skin tone of the legs
4. to feminize the leg (accentuating the curves of the leg)
5. to pull an outfit together
6. to add polish or spark to an outfit

I think the 4th point is why most folks are having a challenge with pantyhose for men.

That said, I don’t think pantyhose or tights are going to make it big in the area of main stream fashion and or everyday “outerwear” for men any time soon. Just as I wouldn’t wear my yoga pants to work or anywhere other than yoga class or maybe a quick dash to the corner store, I wouldn’t expect to see men showing up in shorts and tights at the office, unless they cycled in from home and then changed into dress pants for work. Not that it would bother me - Just can’t see it happening any time soon unless you are a bike courier.

The material is not that soft, the knit is not as nice as some of the less expensive brands.  The extra seems are annoying and binding at times.

The good points; great waist band, nice heal and toe construction and sizing is generous.

Conclusions: Gerbe could do better making them softer and adding more spandex, (6% Elastane not enough) use a better type of knit for the leg. Would I buy them again? No.

They feel great on. They are wearable on a hot day if you have to and have a sheen to them that makes your legs look great. Since they are so sheer care must be taken when putting them on. Sizing is accurate.
